As you build a recruitment agency business,
“We want to win candidates from organic traffic.”
That is a common thought.
When you think about winning candidates from organic traffic, problems like these come up.
“We came to this late…”
“We get a fair number of page views, but they do not turn into registrations”
“We do not know whether our keyword strategy is right”
The chart below shows traffic for a recruitment agency whose SEO we support.
They came to this late, but they have built up solid traffic.
And it is not only traffic: it also leads to registrations and placements.

Digital marketing for recruitment agencies is crowded, but there are strategies and points that let you win in it.
So that the right strategy and thorough SEO work can bring you traffic and registrations, this article explains SEO article strategy and SEO work for recruitment agencies, for the people below.
▽Who this is for
・Anyone who wants to run SEO article work
・Anyone already producing articles who is unsure whether to carry on as they are
※ If you want to build a job board and win organic traffic around job listings, see the article below.
[Recruitment] The cost of building a jobs site, and 11 tips
1. Why take on content marketing
The reason for taking on content marketing is, first of all, to build a second pillar for attracting people, and the requests behind that tend to look like this.
- We want to try methods other than scouting and online advertising
- We want to hold down ad spend in future
- We want to combine X and YouTube in a media mix and build awareness
With rules on scouting platforms and Indeed getting stricter, content marketing is drawing more attention than ever.
2. Four advantages of taking on SEO in recruitment
What are the advantages for a recruitment agency in doing content marketing and SEO work?
There are four in particular.

2.1 You win new registrations
When people who are starting to think about changing jobs, or who are weighing it up, read content written for them, they are more likely to register for your service.
That said, To win traffic from search results, you need to rank near the top.
Looking at click rate by search position below, the click rate falls as the position drops.
| Search position | Click rate |
|---|---|
| 1 | 13.94% |
| 2 | 7.52% |
| 3 | 4.68% |
| 4 | 3.91% |
| 5 | 2.98% |
| 6 | 2.42% |
| 7 | 2.06% |
| 8 | 1.78% |
| 9 | 1.46% |
| 10 | 1.32% |
Click rates will not always look like this, so treat the figures as a rough guide, but the tendency for the click rate to fall away from the top positions holds for any keyword.
Do the SEO work properly so that people click.
2.2 It builds trust with candidates
Taking on content marketing builds trust.
The reason is that when someone searches for a service they saw in an ad and lands on the website, a site full of content leaves a very different impression from one without.
For example, if someone sees an ad for a recruitment service specialising in back-office roles and finds content on the site written for back-office people, such as how to write a CV or what to ask the interviewer, that backs up the claim of specialisation and builds trust.
Crossing advertising with SEO lifts the effect of your marketing as a whole.
2.3 It is an asset, and pays off over the medium to long term
The third advantage is that it is an asset, and the cost performance is good over the medium to long term.
With advertising, paying the platform gets you shown straight away and brings in registrations, but there is a monthly running cost.
Content such as SEO articles is the opposite: it costs to produce, but it builds up on your own site and keeps generating traffic.
The article below covers advertising strategy and methods.

2.4 You can use it to nurture candidates
It can be used with people who registered for your service but did not go on to a meeting, or did not accept an offer, to nurture them.
Sending useful content by email newsletter or LINE, matched to each registrant’s profile, raises engagement and makes it more likely they will think of your service when the urge to move jobs returns.
Sending content that has little to do with the candidate, or sending too often, works against you, so it matters that you manage each candidate’s profile properly in a CRM.

3. Strategy for producing SEO articles
From here, three strategies for anyone about to produce SEO articles and take on content marketing.
3.1 Go after the keywords the big players have missed
At the very start of content marketing, research the keywords you are going to target.
High-volume keywords that anyone would think of, the big keywords, are hard to rank for.
So, from the research, you need to pull out the keywords that matter to you and that the big players have missed.
As the work goes on and articles are published, analysing the keywords bringing traffic to your content can also turn up new keywords worth working on.
The keyword research you do at the start is not the whole story, so stay flexible.
3.2 Write articles that are both original and expert
We will go into detail later, but content has to carry originality and expertise.
A specialised and focused service has knowledge and experience that are its own, and putting those into your content raises how both search engines and users rate you.
3.3 Cover every basic piece of SEO work
The big players do their SEO work thoroughly, of course. However high the quality of your content, it will not rank if the SEO work is incomplete.
Implement every piece of SEO work your competitors are doing.
Technical SEO also gets more complex, and therefore harder, once the site has grown large. Design for it as early as you can.

4. Points to watch in SEO work
Here are three points that matter for winning with articles within content marketing.
For points about a job board carrying listings, see the article below.

4.1 Start with the keywords closest to conversion
The steps for producing articles below touch on this too, but following the search journey, you need to give priority to the keywords most likely to lead to a new registration.

In practice that means keywords where someone is looking for a service, such as “changing jobs”, “agency” or “how to write a CV”.
Competitors are likely to be working on these keywords, but the content belongs on any site about changing jobs.
Combine them with keywords from the area you target.
4.2 Build in originality others do not have
An article that looks like everyone else’s will struggle to hold a reader, so you need to get the essentials right: it has to be worth reading.
SEO also has Google’s criteria for assessing a website, known as E-E-A-T.
E: Experience
E: Expertise
A: Authoritativeness
T: Trustworthiness
To build the first E, experience, into your content, it matters that you write your own and your company’s experience and insight into the article.
Hand the whole job to an outside writer and that originality can go missing, so take care.
The interview articles mentioned earlier put the voices of people who use the service into writing, which helps secure the expertise and originality of the site.
Produce good articles that are worth reading and cover the SEO work.

4.3 Put in a CTA that fits the article
Even with a good article and traffic coming in steadily, if there is no proper route through to registration, winning new registrations from the article becomes hard.
Start by placing a CTA at the top and bottom of the article and at the key points within it.
If the CTA is in place but registrations are not coming, use a heatmap tool to analyse where people read closely, then move the CTA or change its wording.
As well as CTAs in the body, a floating CTA fixed to the screen works well.
You can build one yourself, but given the development cost and the effort of running it, implementing it with a tool such as HubSpot is more efficient.

5. The steps for producing SEO articles
Here are three important steps on the way to writing an article.
The process is very fine-grained, so this goes into as much detail as possible.
5.1 Setting out who you are targeting
Set out the age range, gender and concerns of the people you want to learn about your service through the article and go on to register.
One profile will not cover everyone, but too many become hard to manage and the plan-do-check-act cycle stops working.
The target profile is there to align everyone involved so the content work moves forward steadily.
Build a shared understanding and, so that the plan-do-check-act cycle can run, set it out at the common denominator, the minimum needed.
In practice it looks like the diagram below.
| Area | Business domain and job type |
| Demographic information | Gender, age, qualifications and so on |
| Latent | Not really thinking about changing jobs |
| Semi-active | Wondering whether to change jobs |
| Active | Seriously considering a move |
Do give it a go.
5.2 Building a keyword list
The output is a table listing, as completely as possible, the keywords your target is likely to search, classified by the phase they are in.
The tools used for keyword research are below.
・Google Keyword Planner
・Mieruca
・ahrefs
・SimilarWeb
and so on
There are free keyword research tools, but they limit how often you can use them, give you less output, and can lack accuracy.
They also have features beyond keyword research that make SEO work more efficient, so it is worth trying one.
5.3 Writing the title and the outline
The title and outline of an article are what decide where an SEO article ranks, and are extremely important.
Before writing the title and outline, set out the following again for each keyword you are targeting.
① Keywords around the one you are targeting
② The persona who will read this article
③ The search intent behind the keyword
④ What you want this article to resolve
⑤ The competitive picture
and so on
For the title, use the keywords searched alongside your target keyword and the competitive picture to choose which keywords go in and in what order.
In the outline, define the mid-level and lower-level headings, the H2s and H3s.
Working from ① to ⑤ above, set out the following and build the outline.
As you do, give each heading, each topic, a reason for being there, along these lines.
・There is search demand and competing articles cover it
・There is search demand and competing articles do not cover it
・Search volume is low but the demand is there
and so on
Do all of this and you can write SEO articles that beat the competition.
6. Who produces SEO articles
6.1 Producing them yourself
If you want to do it in-house, you can either write everything internally or bring in outside writers.
If you have the setup to cover the points and actions above and see an article through to publication, doing content marketing internally is the better route.
For the writing itself you can commission freelance writers on Lancers or CrowdWorks, which is worth considering.
We offer a service that supports companies wanting to bring marketing in-house, called “Inhouse Lab”. If you are interested, do get in touch.

6.2 Outsourcing
If you lack the resources or the know-how internally, outsource to a company that can produce SEO articles for recruitment agency businesses.
The advantage of outsourcing is that you can draw on the track record, insight and SEO tools the contractor holds, which raises the chance the work succeeds.
Even when the work is outsourced, aligning on how to build originality into the article, checking the content and so on take a certain amount of your time.
Decide clearly who inside the company is responsible for the review.
7. SEO case studies
Here are a few examples of the SEO support we have provided to recruitment agencies.
We have left out the sector and the specifics so that the companies cannot be identified, but we hope they are useful as a reference.
7.1 Over 20,000 monthly sessions and conversions won in year two.
A late entrant to the market, where we write guide articles on changing jobs and keep improving how the site runs.
Conversions came in from the first month, and growth has been steady enough that monthly sessions passed 20,000 in year two.

7.2 Rising up the rankings in a crowded field
They had been doing content marketing for some time but could not get ahead of competitors, and conversions from articles were nowhere in sight.
Our support started again from a full keyword list, set priorities and then worked through the articles.
We raised the originality of the content by building the company’s own activities, expertise and successful placements into the articles.
As a result, they won top positions on many high-value keywords they had never ranked for, and traffic increased.
7.3 Registrations from articles up 300%
Their content marketing was bringing in traffic, but it was not turning into conversions.
After a full review of where the CTAs sat and what they said, monthly conversions rose by 300%.

8. Making content marketing work for a recruitment agency
We hope you now have a picture of what makes content marketing work.
Here is a short summary.
・Show your originality and expertise
・Start with the keywords closest to registration
・Cover every part of SEO
Content marketing takes time, but it serves both new registrations and the nurturing of people already registered, which makes it well worth doing.
Use the resources you have inside and outside the company, and give it a go.

9. Frequently asked questions
Q1 Will high-quality articles rank at the top?
Quality accounts for roughly 40 to 60% of what it takes to rank at the top, so writing a high-quality article does not guarantee a top position.
That said, as covered in the advantages above, articles also work for nurturing, so quality is important as a starting point.
Q2 How many articles should we produce?
The number depends on the business as a whole and on the goal you set for the work.
You can talk to us about the whole picture, goal setting included, so do get in touch.
Q3 Do articles written by AI work?
Whoever the writer is, an article that reads well and rewards the reader has to get the essentials of SEO right, which means building in originality and expertise.
AI makes the writing step more efficient, but it cannot yet produce an article that gets those essentials right, so a human hand is needed somewhere.
You can also use it to check phrasings you would not have reached yourself, or to check that nothing is missing, so it comes down to how you use it.
Q4 How should we analyse the site?
Most site analysis is done with Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4. They take a little specialist knowledge, so at first they feel unfamiliar and it can be hard to analyse properly.
Another option is a marketing automation tool with SEO analysis built in, such as HubSpot. The interface is clear and the analysis is easy to run, so it is worth considering.
We will add further questions as they come up.
