AI-generated answers such as Google’s SGE (Search Generative Experience) and Perplexity have become widespread, and search itself is about to change fundamentally.
Marketing from here on cannot be only about ranking at the top of the search results; you also need a strategy for being chosen by AI — AEO, or answer engine optimisation.

This article covers the basics of AEO, how exactly it differs from SEO, and a practical guide to what you should be doing now, with CRM and MA use woven in.

Summary
・AEO is the work of optimising so that AI search engines choose you as a trustworthy source for their answers and quote you
・Where conventional SEO chases traffic, AEO puts the weight on accuracy of information and on branded search arriving via AI
・To be valued by AI you must lead with the conclusion, implement structured data and prove E-E-A-T (expertise and authority)
・Use tools such as HubSpot and Perplexity to measure, regularly and from several angles, how often AI quotes you and how visible your brand is
・Designing the whole run, from winning awareness through AEO to creating meetings in CRM/MA, is the key to the next generation of sales strategy

▼Who this is for
・Anyone worried about losing site traffic as search engines change
・Anyone who wants to win awareness through AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity
・Anyone who wants to win high-quality leads efficiently

1. What is AEO? Why it matters in the age of AI search

1.1 What AEO means

AEO, or answer engine optimisation,
is the work of adjusting things so that AI answer engines — Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity —choose your content as the best answer and quote it。
The aim is not to appear in a list of search results but to become the basis for the answer the AI generates.

1.2 Why AEO matters alongside conventional SEO

Why AEO matters alongside conventional SEO

Conventional SEO, or search engine optimisation, was mainly about getting onto the first page of results for a particular keyword and drawing users to your own site.
With the arrival of AI search, though, the mechanics of search itself have changed considerably.

In AI search, the AI generates an answer to the user’s question directly.
As a result, zero-click search — where the question is settled before the user ever visits a website — is on the rise.

So waiting passively to be found is no longer enough.
What is needed is active work to push the AI’s algorithms into quoting your information correctly and choosing it as the basis for an answer。

1.3 Recent developments that have changed the way into search (Google’s AI Overviews, OpenAI’s ChatGPT)

So where exactly is this change happening?
The clearest examples are the new search experiences from Google and ChatGPT.

Google has rolled out AI Overviews in earnest, showing an AI summary at the very top of the results.
Search on Google now and an AI summary appears at the top of the screen.
It saves the trouble of reading several sites side by side, so most users read that first.

Conversational AI such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also made search standard, generating answers by referring to the latest information on the web.
More and more people settle what they want to know through conversation, and it has become a new way in to information。

These AIs pull preferentially from the vast data on the internet the information that is reliable, concise and structured.
Being quoted as the expert in your field does more than stem the fall in traffic to your website; it is powerful branding — a company the AI itself judges trustworthy.

2. How AEO differs from SEO [with comparison table]

AEO does not reject SEO; it is an extension of it。
The measures used to judge it and the qualities the content needs, however, clearly differ.
The points are explained below, against a comparison table setting out the differences.

2.1 Differences in where it appears, what judges it, the aim and the KPIs

SEO and AEO both aim to solve the user’s problem, but the process and the way they are judged differ.

Where it appears and what judges it
SEO targets search engines such as Google, where a search algorithm judges the page.
AEO, by contrast, targets AI answer engines such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
Judgement moves to a large language model (LLM), with the AI deciding which information is the most accurate and concise answer to the user’s question.

The aim and the KPIs
With conventional SEO, the main goal was to appear on the first page of results and increase traffic — clicks — to your own site.
KPIs were therefore usually search ranking, CTR (click rate) and traffic.
With AEO those same KPIs remain important measures, but weight also falls on being taken up as a citation within the answer the AI generates, and on the brand name being mentioned directly.

The content factors that count
With SEO, what matters is making the search engine recognise the page as expert and trustworthy. The authority of the author and the site’s owner (E-E-A-T), good backlinks from other sites, and a page experience readers find effortless are all judged.
Comprehensive, substantial content tends to be preferred.
With AEO, on top of the elements that matter for SEO, two things become especially important: how concise the information is, and how well it is structured.
To make information easy for AI to read, you need clear definitions in a question-and-answer format and tagged structured data.
AI has also been trained on a vast amount of information from across the internet, so companies that hold original first-hand information, rather than a copy of someone else’s, tend to earn more trust.

2.2 Original data and structure are what matter in AEO

As the comparison table shows, AEO sits on a continuum with SEO, but results come directly from shaping information into a form that AI can extract and reassemble easily.
Here we look in detail at the two that matter most: original data and structure.

◆Original first-hand information is the source of trust
Answer engines are trained on a vast body of existing information from across the internet.
As a result they tend to rate first-hand information that only one company can supply more highly than the generic explanations found everywhere. For example:

・Concrete research data and statistics: Figures from your own surveys and market research
・Examples drawn from real experience: Successes that came out of working with customers, and the concrete process of solving a problem
・An expert’s own view: Considered thinking built on years of experience, and recommendations about where the industry is heading

.
Data like this comes from the customer feedback held in your CRM (customer relationship management) or SFA (sales force automation) system, or from analysing the user behaviour captured by MA (marketing automation).

◆Structure and definitions: conveying information to AI correctly
AI does not only pick up the nuance of a sentence the way a person does; it also weighs how easy the data is to process. Two things are essential here.

① Implementing structured data (schema markup)
Structured data means writing specific tags into your HTML so that search engines and AI are told directly that
“this is a price”
“this is the answer to an FAQ”
and so on. Set it up properly and AI can extract the information without guesswork, which makes it more likely to be cited as the source of an answer.

② Clear, concise definitions (question-and-answer format)
AI tries to present a conclusion to the user’s question immediately. So avoid long-winded explanations and write
“X is …”
“There are three solutions. The first is …”
Concise, structured writing of this kind is highly effective. A considerate design that lets readers find the answer they want straight away also raises how AI rates the page.

3. Seven practical activities for creating content that AI will cite

There are clear conventions to content that AI favours.
Build up the activities below and you can dramatically raise how often AI cites you, and with it the credibility of your business.

3.1 Put the conclusion first, every time (the PREP method)

AI scans the opening of a text and judges on the spot whether it suits the answer.
Structure the text as point, reason, example, point Apply the PREP method consistently.。
A structure that answers the user’s question straight away is seen as the most honest answer by both AI and the reader.

3.2 FAQ design: make the user’s question the heading

Use the questions people put to AI — “what is X?”, “how do you do X?” — as your headings.
Write the question and the answer concisely as a pair and AI will more readily recognise it as the direct answer to that question.

3.3 Giving information meaning with structured data (Schema.org)

Implement the code that conveys the meaning of your information directly to AI crawlers as well as to people. Mark up FAQs, how-tos and author information correctly and the credibility of your information is conveyed correctly in machine-readable form.

3.4 Remove noise by matching headings to the text beneath them

Make the topic in the heading match the text directly beneath it exactly.
Cutting out excessive decoration and shifts in context, and writing in a semantically correct way, prevents AI from misreading you and helps it extract the information.

3.5 Build in first-hand information and original data that only you have

AI is good at summarising existing information but cannot create new facts. Your own research data, successes from the field —include first-hand information that no one else has and you become a one-of-a-kind source that AI finds well worth citing.

3.6 Disclose the information that proves expertise and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T)

AI checks not only the content itself but, rigorously, who is publishing it. The measure for that is the four elements known as E-E-A-T.

・Experience:Is there an original perspective grounded in real experience?
・Expertise:Is there deep knowledge of the field?
・Authoritativeness:Is there a track record or standing that is publicly recognised?
・Trustworthiness:Is the source of the information clear, and is it published honestly?

To secure these elements, set out the background and track record of the writer and the reviewer in a profile, and show that an expert is publishing with accountability and AI will pick you up more often.

3.7 Strengthen context for AI by optimising internal links

Internal links are the links that connect content within your own site. Connecting closely related content properly ties scattered fragments of information together and builds the whole site into a single systematic knowledge base.
AI follows links to grasp the shape of a site, so when the internal links are in order it correctly recognises your site as an authoritative source with deep, comprehensive information in a particular field and rates it more highly.

4. Three design points for turning AI search into leads

As set out so far, the work of getting chosen by AI matters enormously.
But being cited by AI only creates a point of contact.
What matters more is how you lead the user who saw that information to an actual enquiry or order.

Here we explain the concrete design points for doing that.

4.1 ① Keep your information consistent across every channel to establish expertise

AI judges a company’s credibility by pulling together everything online — not just the official site but social media, press releases and outside publications.

So if what you publish is piecemeal, or the claims differ from one platform to the next, AI cannot be confident that the company has real expertise.
You need to organise the information at every digital touchpoint so that AI can understand your strengths correctly and consistently.
Whoever publishes should keep the density and coherence of the information in mind. That raises the chance of being chosen by AI as a recommendation it can trust.

4.2 ② Don’t let it end on the results page — lead people to branded search

Precisely because zero-click search, where AI finishes the answer on the results page, is becoming the norm, it matters that your company and product names appear in that answer as credible evidence.
The first step is to leave the reader of that answer thinking “this explanation is very clear” and “a company that publishes this looks trustworthy”.
From there, publishing highly original first-hand information that leads people to search for your company by name, or to click through from the link in the answer, is what decides whether you win customers later on.

4.3 ③ Connect AEO to your CRM and MA to turn it into leads

To reliably turn users who found you through AI search into leads, a connection to your CRM (customer relationship management) and MA (marketing automation) is essential.

・Make interest visible and respond immediately
Make visible what problem a user who came to the site from an AI answer is trying to solve. With a platform such as HubSpot you can automatically act at the right moment — offering a guide, for example — when a prospect views a particular page.

・Automate the path from awareness to a meeting
Nurture the prospects caught in the wider net of awareness that AEO creates with MA, then hand them smoothly to a salesperson through the CRM. Building that whole flow into a system is the winning line in digital selling from here on.

From AEO to winning leads

5. Measuring the effect of AEO work: three steps from setting KPIs to using the tools

Once the work is in place, you need to review its effect properly.
AEO is judged on different axes from conventional SEO, so monitoring it needs a fresh perspective.

Here we build the measurement set-up in the following three steps.

5.1 [Step 1] Defining KPIs: deciding the four measures to watch

First, choose the key performance indicators (KPIs) that tell you whether the work is functioning, matched to your own objectives.
KPIs like the following are commonly used.

KPI Summary
(what it measures)
Purpose and importance
(why you watch it)
AI Overviews
citations
Whether your company name or
content appears in AI answers
To check whether AI recognises you as a trustworthy answer source — a pass or fail for AEO
Sessions referred Site visits that came through
a link inside an AI answer
To measure whether users went beyond zero-click search and acted on wanting to know more — the real benefit
Trend in branded searches Direct searches on your company
or service name
To measure whether AI answers are spreading brand awareness and winning users’ trust
Search Console
Impressions
Total number of times you appeared on a results page To measure the exposure you got in front of users as part of an AI answer even without a click — the awareness effect

・Whether your content is cited or shown in AI Overviews
AI Overviews is the feature that shows an AI-generated answer at the top of Google’s results. Whether your information is cited there is the most direct result of AEO.

・Sessions to your site from links inside AI answers
Measure how many people actually visited — the session count — from a link to your site included as a source in an AI-generated answer.

・Growth in branded searches on a particular theme
When AI shows your name repeatedly as a trustworthy source, branded searches — people searching directly on your company name — increase. That is evidence that brand awareness has risen.

・Changes in impressions in Search Console
Search Console is a free tool for analysing how your site performs in Google search. Tracking impressions — the number of times users saw you as part of an AI answer, even without clicking — makes the latent contribution to awareness visible.

Defining these measures gives you more than plain traffic analysis: a health check on the brand that measures how much AI and users trust you.

5.2 [Step 2] Measuring and visualising: choosing tools to suit the purpose

Set up an environment that measures your chosen KPIs accurately. Use the following tools according to purpose to make the current state visible.

Example: HubSpot AEO Grader (scoring where you stand)
Start by diagnosing the technical health of the site: whether its structure as a whole suits AEO.

HubSpot AEO Grader (scoring where you stand)
Source: Hubspot AEO Grader

Example: Ahrefs / Mieruca (tracking citations)
Track with data how many featured snippets you win and your share of exposure against competitors. This makes the citation and impression KPIs visible.

Example: AI Overview / ChatGPT (checking by hand at regular intervals)
Enter your target keywords yourself and look at how you are described. You do this to understand exactly how you are being cited, which the numbers in Search Console do not show.

5.3 [Step 3] Monitoring quality: check the accuracy of AI answers regularly

Finally, build in a flow that audits the quality of AI-generated answers at regular intervals. Rising numbers do you no good if the content is wrong.
・Checking for hallucinations, or false information
Check whether AI is generating information not based in fact. If something wrong is spreading, correct and structure the information on your official site so that AI learns the right version.

・Checking that the context of a citation fits
Check that you are not being cited in a context you did not intend — a negative topic, or an unrelated theme.
In the age of AI search, false information spreading damages the brand directly. Measuring and stopping there is not enough; keeping AI constantly learning the correct information is the shortest route to building trust over the long term.

6. Becoming the company and the publication that gets chosen in the age of AI search

Working on AEO (answer engine optimisation) is more than a technique for getting your name into an AI answer.

It means understanding what troubles the user deeply and continuing to offer the most dependable answer. Step by step, that is what builds the trust in a company that both AI and users choose.
Search may have moved from comparing several sites to settling the matter with one AI-generated answer, but what a company has to face does not change.
Rather than being pushed about by a passing fashion, take the longer view: organise valuable information, publish it, and grow a publication that works as a company asset for years.
