Ranking well in YouTube search brings more views and more subscribers.
At the same time, many people who have started posting on YouTube find that their videos do not appear in search,
and that views do not grow.
This article explains why a video does not appear in search, and what to do about it.

1. Why your video does not appear in search

Why your video does not appear in search

Here is why a video may not appear when you search for it.
There are three likely causes.

1. The keyword is not in the title or the description
2. Not enough time has passed since you posted
3. You are targeting a keyword with strong competition

Let us take each in turn.

1. The keyword is not in the title or the description
The first reason is that the keyword is not in the title or the description.
YouTube uses the title and description, among other things, to judge whether the video is relevant to what the person searched for.
Including the keyword in the title and description gives YouTube something to judge the content by, and helps in the search results.
Keep the title to around 15 to 30 characters, and put the keyword in the first half.

One thing to watch: do not stop at the title.
Remember to put the keyword in the description too.
Putting the keyword in the tags and hashtags as well raises the chances of ranking higher still. YouTube is crawled by what is sometimes called the YouTube robot.
Putting the keyword in the description and the tags as well as the title
raises the chance of the crawler finding it,
and of its being recognised as a keyword of greater importance.

If you have posted a video and it does not appear in search, the first thing to do
is check whether the keyword is in the title and the description.
Working on keywords is an absolute requirement for ranking well.

2. Not enough time has passed since you posted
The second reason is that not enough time has passed since you posted.
Shortly after posting, a video may simply not appear in the results at all.
It takes time for YouTube to become aware that the video exists.
It can take several days for the crawler to find it.
It is generally reflected within a week at most, so wait rather than worry.

3. You are targeting a keyword with strong competition
YouTube’s search results tend to favour videos with many views and popular channels.
A popular channel is judged by its subscriber count and view count.
Where an extremely popular channel already exists, or there are many competing videos,
your video may be buried among them and pushed out of the results altogether.

For example, when titling a video about sweets,
you would probably include the keyword sweets.
But sweets has so much competition that viewers are unlikely to find you.
If a popular sweets channel already exists, your video will be buried and fall out of the results.
The answer is to use keywords with weaker competition.
A combination of three or four words, a long-tail keyword, naturally has less competition.
Examples of long-tail keywords would be sweets maritozzo next or sweets recipe microwave.
With less competition, the chances of your video being found rise.
A keyword tool is useful for finding long-tail keywords.
It shows combinations with few competitors straight away, which is convenient.

2. How to check where your video ranks

What matters in running a YouTube channel is analysing and improving.
Accurate analysis lets you act on the right improvements and turn them into results.
Start by checking where your own video ranks.

Always use a private window when checking the current ranking.
YouTube has personalised search, which analyses your search and viewing history
and tailors the results to you.

If you search from your usual account with personalised search on,
your past searches affect the results and you may not see the true ranking.

You can switch to a private window with these shortcuts
Windows: Ctrl + Shift + N
Mac: Command + Shift + N

3. How to rank your video higher

There are several things to get right if you want your video to rank.

The title
Start with how you write the title.

As explained above, is the right keyword in the title?
With the keywords properly chosen, your video will appear when people search on Google or on YouTube.
Rather than titling at random, following the rules when you choose
can greatly increase both the click rate and the number of views.

Video
Including the keyword within the video itself also matters.
Mentioning the keyword, while keeping it natural,
and showing a slide that uses it, are both effective.
As a result YouTube recognises the content as related to the keyword,
which helps it rank.

Description
Including the keyword in the description that introduces the video
can also help it rank.

For SEO purposes, YouTube’s search engine
judges the content of a video mainly from text,
so including the keyword in the description as well as the title matters.
Alongside the main keyword,
do include the secondary and suggested keywords you could not fit into the title.
Keep the text a reasonable length and work the keywords in naturally.
Look at competing videos’ descriptions for reference.

Meta tags
Meta tags tell YouTube what the video is about and what it is like;
they are not visible to viewers.

Setting the right keywords in the meta tags raises the chance of your video appearing as a related video alongside others on a similar subject.
The keyword you are aiming at may then rank well.
One thing to watch: cramming in too many keywords can be treated as spam, so keep the number you set small and focused.

The thumbnail
The thumbnail is the face of the video.
Even if the video catches someone’s eye, they will not click unless the thumbnail makes them want to watch.
An appealing thumbnail has several things to get right: the composition, how much text, the typeface, the colours and the space.

In closing

This article has explained why your video may not appear when you search for it on YouTube,
and how to get it to rank.
Ranking well comes down to several things: putting the keyword in the title and the description,
and how you choose that keyword in the first place.

What matters in running a YouTube channel is analysing and improving.
Accurate analysis lets you act on the right improvements and turn them into results.
Understand properly why the video is not appearing, act on the improvements set out here,
and it should become a video that far more people notice.
